Capoeira on the beach in Bahia while on a trip to Brazil.
View of Brazilian beach and hammock on trip to Bahia, Brazil.

train capoeira where it all began

Rodas on the beach, workshops at local capoeira academies, spontaneous street rodas . . . experience capoeira in its birthplace with up-close access to the tradition, spirituality, drumming, and axé of the Afro-Brazilian culture.

travel to afro-brazilian quilombos

Visit the remote quilombos of southern Bahia where Mestre Jamaika’s family comes from and learn about these villages that originated from African-Brazilians who were enslaved. Walk on the land and interact with the people whose history and traditions created the Afro-Brazilian art forms enjoyed around the world today.

relax at the beach

Explore the beautiful beaches of Porto Seguro and Arraial D'Ajuda for a few days upon arrival. Then settle into Mestre Jamaika’s family home in the small fishing village of Nova Viçosa for the remainder of the trip where you’ll be steps away from the tranquil beach. Nap in a hammock as you listen to the waves, marvel at the sunrises and sunsets, and jump into the sea for a swim after a sandy training session.

explore the jungle & the sea

Adventure into the tropical jungle on a guided trek as you forage for beribas and perobas—the sacred wood of the berimbau. Then sail to Abrolhos National Marine Park, an area of islands off the coast with the most marine biodiversity in Brazil and the South Atlantic, and where humpback whales travel to breed from June-November.

immerse yourself in culture

You’ll experience traditional home-cooked Afro-Brazilian food, practice the language, and feel the warmth of the people you encounter. You’ll travel to areas of Brazil with a long Indigenous, African, and colonial history as we spend time in:

  • Porto Seguro

  • Arraial D'Ajuda

  • Nova Viçosa

  • Caravelas

Mestre Jamaika was the best trip guide, teacher, and Bahia expert. I appreciate how concerned about our safety and how much work he put into exposing us to different mestres and cultural experiences. He also did a great job at providing options for every activity; he didn’t pressure anyone to participate in anything they didn’t feel comfortable doing, while still providing information and insight.

As a capoeirista, this trip reinforced my understanding of how important it is to preserve and protect the roots of Afro-Brazilian arts and for its practitioners to understand that they are a part of a long, rich, beautiful and often tragic history that must not be lost as the arts evolve.

Witnessing the way Afro-Brazilians live day-to-day and being able to converse with them directly about their history, culture, and land is an experience that made me value the fortitude of such a rich and repressed culture. These lessons will never be as raw or impactful as when you learn them from their source.

We owe so much thanks to the Indigenous-and Afro-Brazilian people who preserve, uphold, and share their culture with others around the world. We appreciate those who open their hearts and community to travelers and through our trips, we are glad to directly support my Brazilian local peers with our dollars for their services.
